Phacelia tanacetifolia is an annual that grows erect to a maximum height near 100 centimetres with none to a few branches. The dense and hairy inflorescence is a one-sided curving or coiling cyme of bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue and lavender. Each flower is just under a centimetre long and has protruding whiskery stamens. Phacelia tanacetifolia is native to South Western USA and North West Mexico. It is used outside its native range in agriculture as a cover crop and a bee plant, an attractant for other beneficial insects, as a green manure and an ornamental plant. We also grow it here for the novelty of the blue coloured pollen that the bees love to collect.

Growing Conditions : Phacelia tanacetifolia prefers a full sun position in well drained soil. It is drought tolerant and will grow in sandy and rocky soil but will suffer in waterlogged conditions. It may not handle extreme Summer heat so may be a better cool season plant.

Natural Biological Pest Control : Hoverflies are attracted to these plants which are useful as a natural biological pest control as they then feed on aphids and other plant pests in your garden and the phacelia plant surroundings.

Spiritual Benefits : Phacelia symbolizes endurance, strength and determination. Place a pot of phacelia where you like to sit and contemplate the world and let its healing properties fill your concern and worry with strength instead.
